How to store crypto safely

Where you keep your coins matters as much as which coins you buy. Here is how the three common options compare, and when each one makes sense.

Three ways to hold crypto

Exchange account

Coins stay on the exchange after you buy them. Easiest for trading, but the exchange holds the keys: a hack, a bankruptcy or a frozen account can cut you off.

Software wallet

An app on your phone or computer holds the keys for you. You control the coins, but the device is online, so malware and phishing are the main risks.

Hardware wallet

A small device keeps the keys offline and confirms every transaction on its own screen, so an infected computer cannot move your coins.

Hardware wallets

Two makers dominate: both have years of track record and support thousands of coins. Buy only from the official store, never second-hand or from marketplaces.

Ledger

Secure-element chip, Bluetooth on some models, and the Ledger Live app for buying, swapping and staking.

  • Nano S Plus, Nano X, Flex, Stax
  • Ledger Live app (desktop and mobile)
  • Works with MetaMask and many other wallets

Trezor

Open-source firmware that anyone can audit, a simple touchscreen on newer models, and the Trezor Suite app.

  • Safe 3, Safe 5, Model One
  • Trezor Suite app (desktop and web)
  • Fully open-source firmware

Protect your recovery phrase

  1. It is the wallet. The 12 or 24 words restore your coins on any device. Whoever has them owns the coins.
  2. Keep it offline. Write it on paper or a metal plate. No photos, cloud notes, password managers or email drafts.
  3. Store it safely. Somewhere private and fire-safe; consider a second copy in another location.
  4. Never type it into a website. No exchange, wallet maker or support agent will ever ask for it.

Questions

Is it safe to keep crypto on an exchange?

For amounts you actively trade, a large regulated exchange with two-factor authentication is reasonable. For savings, it is safer to hold the keys yourself, because exchanges can be hacked, freeze withdrawals or fail.

Do I need a hardware wallet?

If you hold an amount you would not want to lose and plan to keep it for months or years, yes: it is the most practical way to keep your keys offline.

What happens if I lose my hardware wallet?

Nothing is lost as long as you have the recovery phrase: restore it on a new device and your coins reappear. Without the phrase the coins cannot be recovered.

Ledger or Trezor?

Both are well-established. Ledger offers Bluetooth models and a wide app ecosystem; Trezor is fully open source. Pick the one whose app and screen you prefer.
